Swing Dancing!

Oh boy did I have fun today.
Well, got up, did some Japanese practice. Went to the gym.
When i got back, i started painting/staining the garden house. I got about 1.5 hours in. Just got the first half of the front side down. I got the other front side and then the 2 sides, the back doesn't count. It wasn't too bad.
After that, I headed out to AA to go Swing Dancing. I only got to dance hard once in China, and that was for like 10 minutes. I also taught Yumi some of it, she was good.
But the first couple dances I did were awkward and I had to find myself again. After a few dances and a constant changing of shoes, I finally found it. I was having a blast. Met up with some ol' friends and it was just wonderful. Still, there were some stuck up fellas that didnt' seem to learn their lesson in the past year. Oh well.
During the dance, I felt like i was getting dizzy. Kinda felt like I was getting a little sick. I dunno. All that spinning maybe was making me dizzy. Oh well.
I headed home at about 1125 and fell asleep real quick. Goodnite.

Corpse Bride Tuesdays

Lets see. My parents were babysitting their friends' baby and dog. The baby was cute. The dog wasn't. They were both wearing diapers though. The dog has just come down with a brain tumor and isn't the same anymore. So, they got a diaper on the girl so she doesn't make any mistakes in the house.
Today saw me getting my bootie in gear and getting a short term membership at the local gym in Trenton. So, I rode my bike there. It was good. Gonna be sore later.
I practiced a bunch of japanese today.
I started work on scraping all the old paint and dirt off the garden house because my mom keeps bugging me about it. So, after the gym, I grabbed the water bucket and brush and scrapped it down. Got rid of alot of the junk. Tomorrow I will start painting...staining the wood again.
After that, we had dinner with my folks' friends. It was nice. Then after they left and dinner was done, I headed out to Birmingham to meet up with Rose to see Corpse Bride for free at the Uptown Palladium.
The theatre was quite snazzy. It was crammed up in downtown area and they were able to find space for all the movie theatres on the z-axis. I think there were 3-4 floors or something. This place reeked of upscale richness...i mean, hell, its Birmingham. Here, you could buy dinner to eat with your movie viewing experience. Yes, you can get candy as well, but I mean, full blown dinners. I dont know if they are any good though. That just seems like too much. But, if you got the money to waste, I guess do it. Prior to the movie starting, during the commercials, they had a still for an "Affordable Private Jet" company. Rose laughed and said, "Yeah, the difference of this community and my community is that at my local theatre, they don't have commercials for "Affordable Private Jets" but for "Jet's Pizza"." Good call.
Corpse Bride was a good movie. Classic tongue-in-cheek Tim Burton animation. Lots of fun. Its creepy at moments, but nothing bad. Its great kids fun. Good stuff. I can't spoil it.
After that, I spent about 30-45 minutes waiting in the parking garage for all the cars to leave. It was crowded, after not moving for about 5 minutes, I pulled into a parking spot and waited till all the cars had left. I didnt feel like wasting gas considering its sooooo damn expensive. One proof to show that the Iraq war was not about oil...gas prices are the highest they have been in 20 years. ;-)
Upon finally exiting the structure, i headed over to Luna just to stop by. They were having a video nite of some industrial bands. When I showed up they were playing a Cruxshadows video...i laughed. That band blows.
Talked with some people and left about an hour or so later. Headed home and fell asleep. Goodnite.

First Monday back.

Well, i really can't remember what I did today. Worked on some japanese. Rented four movies from the video store that I couldn't find in China: Luther, The Life Aquatic, Beyond the Sea, and Super Sucker. I watched Beyond the Sea and then I watched Luther around 1130pm. So, when it was over and I went to bed, the movie kept playing thru my head. I also went down to the business district of my home town. There were some new things going on, but it was still about the same.

Goodbye Party sunday for Erock.

Well, Erock and Jenn are moving out to SLC the day after my birthday on the 28th. Soooo, they were hosting a farewell gathering. It was cool. Lots of people there and we looked at a couple of my chinese DVDs and had lots of food and sweets. It was very nice.
Just chilling.
They woke me up and took me to Taco Bell at 12pm. Fake mexican food, alrite!
I headed home around 1045pm and went to bed. Goodnite!

September 17, 2005

Super Saturday!

Aaaah, this day was great.
In the morning, things were normal, just tooling around the house taking care of things. Then I chatted with Yumi online for awhile. We tried doing video chat, but all we finally got was that she was able to see and hear my video but I could only hear her. All I got was a green screen. I am gonna need to talk to AOL about that. Lousy punks!
After she went to bed, I headed out to AA to meet up with the AA Wushu Club, which is quite small, for practice before their Moon Festival performance tonite. I practiced witht hme and they asked me to do Meteor Hammer at their show so i was like ,kool.
Between practice and the time that we needed to be at the performance, we had dinner at Jerusalem Gardens on 5th street. OH MAN! HOMMUS IS SOOOOOO GOOD!!! Yummy! Grape leaves...yummy! Awesome food.
Then we headed out to Saline High School where we did our performance. Man, I got to tell you, even in America, you can't take the china outta chinese people. This performance was covered with all the problems and bs that I endured in China. Everyone was late, no one told us anything till the last moment, and the lies...
After my lackluster performance...i don't know why, it just was, I didnt do well... i headed out to E-rock' place where we chilled for about 30 minutes before J came over and I left for LUNA. I got to Luna in Royal Oak around 1115pm and the place had just started getting a little busy. Some of the same people and friends are still there in the same spots. Kinda funny, good, reliable, and sad. ;-) It was good, though, to see that all the bartenders and all the bouncers that I had known are gone. That was a pleasant sight. I mean they were cool and all, but there is other stuff out there.
So, I med up with Rose and Amanda was there in the parking lot and we got drinks and chatted for awhie. Naas showed up along with Bob and we all hung out, chatted, danced, made fun of other people dancing, and caused trouble. It ruled! So much fun. I was afraid I had forgotten how to dance. Then Deor showed up and we danced more. Deor pretty much is the mainstay folk there, he is always there and it just happens that he knows everyone. Very fun guy. I was around till about 2am when they closed shop. Most of the crew left around 130 and stuck around dancing with other friends and meeting new people. We left the bar around 220 after we were tlaking wtih the bartender people and the owner. We got some free passes to go see Corpse Bride on tuesday with the press junket. So I will hit that up. The only requirement was that we come to Luna afterwards. Sounds good, I may be able to score some free NIN tix.
Then we went across the street to National Coney Island to finish sobering up. That was a blast. There were 4 of us and then a couple of the bar workers joined up with us. One of the bartenders I met last year at one of the Detroit swing functions. A reunion of sorts.
I then headed out around 345 to go back to Erock's where I was gonna crash. And I did...on his couch, then on his floor. I was on the couch, but I just felt too uncomfortable for some odd reason. And then his 15lb cat jump on my stomach and walked around on it before he fell asleep. About an hour later i rolled onto the floor and fell asleep on that. The good thing about china is that I learned how to sleep on hard surfaces.
Goodnite...

September 16, 2005

First Friday back.

Lets see... Most of today was spent unpacking and putting things back into order some more. More things to do. Also, I had to help my folks move the bed because they were having a new one put in tomorrow.
I called a bunch of people, relatives and banks. Then headed out to the credit union to get a new credit card. It was interesting to see what has stayed the same and what hasn't.
After doing whatever for the rest of the day, I headed out around 530 to meet up with Matt, Erin, TA, and B-rye. It was great. It was nice to see familiar faces that I haven't seen in awhile. Just hanging out and doing not much, just chatting, was good. But I did learn that some jackass at Comedy Central gave David Spade a TV Show...oh man is it bad. Its just crap. I also learned that a year in China away from all sort of understandable TV commercials, i don't like them now. At all. And I dont' like much TV. Unless a good show is on. I don't feel comfortable with a TV anymore unless its for DVDs or something. I guess thats a good thing.
It was a fun time. Had some nice cooked hamburgers and got to play with their new dog and just chill. Very nice.
I headed home around 1230. Goodnite all.

September 15, 2005

Depression setting in.

Most of today was pretty crappy. I woke up at 530am. Now I had 8 hours, which is good but i was still a bit tired. I fooled around on the computer for a few hours then tried sleeping again and I couldn't. I then got up and had some breakfast. For awhile I was unpacking and trying to put things away in order and find other things that I had shipped home. Man, did this just drag on me. I felt terrible. I just didnt want to do anything. I felt frustrated, sad, and bored. Major crappy. I guess its the jetlag and the missing of Yumi getting me down.
However, the day perked up when i headed out to meet up with some friends in Ann Arbor for gong fu and then for Shorinji Kempo. It was very nice. I had lots of fun. I felt great afterwards.
Lots of things have increased in price since I left. Gas is horrendous and 20oz of pop are now $1.39. I was very surprised but not really. I expected it as I was flying home on the plane, but not when I reached the counter. Man, gas...yikes! I filled up almost just half the tank and it still broke $30. Thats insane. After a year gone, things are either the same or bigger. Strange.
Ok, goodnite, its 2am.

September 14, 2005

The Longest Day.

Ok, after 3 hours of sleep, I got up at 415AM today to prepare for the taxi fella. Yumi was able to move her classes around to allow her to come to the airport and see me off. So sweet. I took all the stuff down and it was a little interesting loading up the taxi. The guitar box was sticking out the back of the trunk, but it was in there snug so it wasn't falling out. However, i was paranoid all the way to the airport and always checking it. Lets just hope we dont get re-ended. Like my trip one month ago to the airport on my way to Shaolin, the taxi driver that picked us up took us to another residence where we got the usual driver. Change in shift maybe. So we headed to the airport.
The past few months the roads between Xiaolan and Guangdong have been under major re-construction. One half of the trip was spent on torn up roads and trying to drive on the shoulder to pass a convoy of 5 big hauler trucks. One other thing about chinese road construction...there are no warning or direction signs at all for dangerous or broken up areas. People just use their eyes to see the damage or the repairing areas which is not a good idea at all at 530Am because you can't see the highway at all. Headlights on these cars don't seem very powerful. Because of the lack of signs, the taxi driver was going like 120km/h ~70m/h when he hit what felt like train tracks.
There was a massive chunk taken out of the road. I swear, I think we caught air. Sure felt like it. It was like we were dropping down into a pit or something. The car lurched and i heard the trunk slam down into my box and i was worried about my things and very irriated with the driver and chinese construction practices. How hard is it too put up a sign that reads, MISSING ROAD - TAKE CARE. We hit about 3 other of those missing road areas afterwards.
We got to the airport safely, thankfully.
I loaded all my crap up and got down and filled out some forms n junk. And I thought I would have some time with Yumi to sit around and just relax but the line up for going thru to the International area was getting really friggin' huge and time was runnning out so we said our emotional goodbye's for now and i went thru the gate. I almost forgot to give her my cellfone as well. I didnt want to leave. I headed on thru to the check in.
Now, I was at the airport rougly 2-1.5 hours ahead of take off which is more than recommended and I was still the last person to check in. And it took the longest to check in ever. Why do you ask? Because, there were 40 American families that were taking this plane from Guangzhou to Tokyo who had just spent the last 2 weeks in China buying their brand new baby. There were 40 adopted babies, 6 to 12 month babies, on my flight from Guangzhou to Tokyo. Can you imagine 40 crying babies on a tightly pack airplane? The crying? The pooping? The smell?
It really wasn't that bad at all. My headfones drowned out most of the baby crying.
But back to check in. So I checked in and my one hardshell suitcase was overweight. The limit was 32kg, mine was 40kg. And that was after I emptied and rearranged it to lower the weight. Yikes. Then I took my oversized guitar box and the price was only 130US. THANK GOD! i was so worried with that Terry dude from NWA luggage claiming that box would be 390US. I still had to pay the 260 though because of the overweight suitcase. Man, it is always something. I got too much junk!
So I rushed to the passport checkpoint. It was getting closer to the time that we were too leave. I was standing in line and the line was half NWA flight people, we all had these little NWA stickers on. There was a chinese guy that was walking aroudn with a clipboard and he asked, in good english, "Are you on the flight to Tokyo with the babies?" I said, "Apparently so." And then he said, "Why are you so late?" In a confrontational tone to me. This got to me and I responded, "Its not my fault your government has made things so bad for its people that 10,000 American families come to china to adopt your children every year because this country sux so bad for its people and these american families just happen to be on my flight and take up all the time at the check in counter......" I didnt actually say that. I said something like, it aint' my fault NWA and the families took so long with check in. I was here earlier than recommended." He was then like, "Maybe next time you should come earlier." And I said, "Next time you should shut your hole." I then said something to him in Chinese and he got scowled at me then he made me go up higher in the line with the rest of the NWA folks.
I figured the plane wouldn't leave without a quarter of its passengers.
I was wearing one of my Shaolin t-shirts and so this made the X-ray guys and the flight attendents all wet. They were like, "Aaaaah, you know Shaolin gong fu?" "Yes, I stayed there for a month".. "Oooooooh, wow, so you know shaolin gong fu! Wow...."
I headed to my seat. In my area, there was no more room and any of the overhead cupboards for carry ons. It was all filled up with bags and babies.
I sat in my seat and put my junk underneath the seats making it a bit more cramped, but it wasn't too bad.
Ok, so these are the folks on the airplane. There were 40 brand new adopted chinese babies, mostly girls. Why girls? I dont know, since the country needs more women, but...its china. Go figure. Along with the babies, they were accompanied by their new, gigantic and morbidly obese, American parents with no knowledge of chinese culture. There were only two families who looked healthy. When I saw this, i shuddered. The other major group on the plane was the Guangzhou Cantonese Chinese Opera troop that was headed for L.A.
So, I sat down next to a couple who had a little 10 month old named Quiun with the English name of Megan. She was really adorable. Very cute and she only cried when her dad held her because she wanted to be held by mommy. She was very playful and she seemed to like me. I got to hold her at one point and I made her do some gong fu. The parents loved it and the kid was smiling, breathing heavily, and drooling which is laughter to their kind. She was also quite ticklish and she liked to chew on her toes. I wish I had that flexibility.
The two I was sitting next to told me of many funny stories that they dealt with. But they mentioned that the group they were with had 22 families, and there were two groups on the plane, thats why 40 kids. But he said that they had some major pieces of work in their group. Like this really large woman who was like, "I hate chinese food, I hate china, I can't stand any part of this culture, blah blah blah blah". Apparently she was quite rude to the director and all the resturants they went too. She would always try western food. And she just pissed off a bunch of folks. And I can just see her, in my head, complaining and shaking her head while her gowls shook back and forth. Yuck. You know that's one baby that is gonna grow up not knowing about where she came from.
Since these are the most Americans i have seen in one place, i really noticed the overweightness and obeseness. I was like, "what are these giant mounds of disgusting flesh and why are you soooo big?!" It just struck me hard. Mostly because I spent a whole year surrounded by skinny ass chinese people. It just opens your eyes right up. Yeah, there were some fat chinese folks but they more or less consisted of beer/pudgy bellies, there was no pear or apple shaped folks. And everyone in china that I saw had necks, ankles, wrists, and chins.
So the flight was good. Thought of Yumi alot. Read a Batman comic on my computer, played with Megan, and talked to her parents.
Surprisingly for leaving a little late, we were able to arrive in Tokyo a little earlier than expected. The winds help us or something, or the rotation of the earth, i dunno. We got to Tokyo and immediately, just from the landing strips, i could tell that this country was much cleaner. The Narita airport was quite nice.
I was able to speak Japanese with some people. I just wanted the practice. I found myself speaking in Chinese as well. I was like, "Xie xie....i mean, arigatogozaimas." All the time. ugh. Hope I didnt offend anyone that might want to chop my head off with a katana.
I hung around until we boarded the next plane. It was a 747 and i was in the middle row. There were 4 seats and only 3 people sat in them, so we had a little bit of extra room. I spoke a little japanese to the people that sat next to me. Then we were off for the 11 hour fligtht. Now it wasn't too bad. The food was good and I was actually able to sleep a little bit considering there were babies everywhere. I didnt really watch the movies that they played. I also played computer a bit before the battery died.
We finally reached the US. i was getting excited.
We touched down in Detroit around 115pm.
We unloaded and I headed to the passport checkpoint and they only had about 4 checkpoints open for the hundreds of people that just arrived on two differnt planes. And they were being very anal on the checking of everything. So it took awhile. I went and grabbed my luggage and went to customs.
I walked up to the guy and he did what I expected, he wanted me to go and have my stuff checked out. So i was like, no problem. He didnt sound to happy or pleasant either. Trying to be a hardass. He signed my paper and told me to go thru the glass doors. Then as I came to the glass doors to go thru, an attendant was all with her hand on her hip and giving me the snake head, "Sir, where you goin?" Um...thru the glass doors like the customs dude, said. "No, I mean, where are you going?" Um...the glass doors....i mean, I am going home. "The exit is that way, sir."
Um...ok, if you dont want me to go thru customs, thats fine with me!
So I left. Ha ha! Awesome.
I met up with my folks and I exchanged some money. After that we headed out of the airport and drove down to go get some Calder's Ice Cream, the best ice cream ever. Better than Ben and Jerry's and better than Stucchi's. After that we headed home. I stopped by a music store and picked up some guitar strings. Then we finally headed home.
Man, it was feeling odd. Nothing really has changed at all. Everything and everybody is the same as when I left. It makes it feel as though this past year in China was almost like a dream or that me at home is a dream. Its strange. Maybe that's the jetlag.
I started a little bit of unpacking at the house. My brother showed up around 430 and we all chatted. Then we had some of the best pizza. OH MAN! IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD! This is the stuff that I have missed! Yummy yummy yummy! I stuffed myself as well because my dad also cooked up some Medium rare steakā€¦..yummy.
After that I set up my computer and sent out emails. Around 930pm, I crashed out and fell asleep. Goodnite.it was super long.

September 12, 2005

The Western Union.

I got up early and took care of some business in the early hours and then I head to the banking outposts that contain Western Union service desks. I needed to get some cash that my folks sent me just in case of emergencies. I took it out in 3 100 US bills. I was never so happy to see Ben Franklin, I wanted to kiss him.
The process to get the cash should have just taken about 10-15 minutes, but instead it took about 1 hour because the chinese were holding the cash on a technicallity. I had all the info there just in the wrong order. So, it was very frusrating. I wanted to grab the guy and go, "Listen, the money is there! I have all the information! WTF!" Finally, after making a call a couple times, they were allowed to give me hints at to what goes where. F-ing A. I mean ugh!
Ok, so i get the cash and go on my way.
Then I find out its a possibility that the price I thought was for the extra bag was going to be double. Jeez. So, i was looking at my money and trying to decide what to do.
i got it figured out now.
I was frustrated again leaving the bank, so i went to 1+1 and got some stuff for the apartment.
I came back and did some more straightening up and getting things ready and trying to relax.
This sofa that came with the apt sux. Forces me to hunch over and my lower back is sore.
I did various things. Went to the shop again to look for something. Couldn't find a tire pump for my bike. I wanted to give it to the Lion Dance boys, but the tire is flat. None of the airpumps had bike knobs. And there are no bike shops near here.
Oh well.
Yumi came home at lunch and cooked remaing food. Very yummy.
Yumi came home at dinner time and made a fantastic dinner. It was very wonderful. She is very talented.
So afterwards, I had to go to my last gongfu practice. It was ok. I worked hard and learned the last part of the 3 Star Fist form (San Xing Quan) (Sam Sing Kuen).
However, it was my last night and I figured Sifu would do something, antying to mark the occasion, but it just passed like a regular night. I was quite surprised. I figured a speech at least, but i don't really care. I was just surprised thats all.
Well, goodnite....

September 11, 2005

A little shove off reminder of this country and its experience.

Quite bitter sweet. I had a wonderful day with fantastic friends that I met and spent the most of the day with then on the way back to the apartment with Yumi, I get my wallet stolen in the time from getting off one bus and then getting onto another one.
It was so quick. And I didn't realize it until after the guy had made off. I have to give the guy some credit, he had amazing skill. My wallet was in my right front pocket under my shoulder bag. He was able to get inbetween that without my noticing anything and I am paranoid, i am always being careful about my wallet and junk.
I wasn't too worried about it though, it was 30RMB. Only problem was my credit card was in there along with my driver's license. So, i got online right when I got back. Talked to my dad and he was able to cancel my card quicker than I would have been able to over the internet. Along with ordering me a new one. Then we spent the rest of the night figuring out how to send me some extra cash via Western Union in case of any emergencies or if anything arises at the airport with my extra oversized box that I am taking home. (I have 3 pieces of luggage to check. The oversized piece is just over regulations on LxWxH.) I figured checking it on the plane is cheaper than trying to use FedEx or UPS, which it is.
Anywho, back to my day. Got up quite early because Coco wanted to meet for breakfast early. Yumi and i were still grogery from the night before. Got home around 3-330AM. So we were really tired. We had a wonderful dim sum breakfast with Coco and her daughter Michelle. she was going back to her school today and had to shop for things, thats why we did it so early. I said my goodbyes and told them I would stay in touch.
After lunch we went back to the apt and took a nap and I did some things while Yumi slept longer. Then we got ready for going out to Shiqi for dinner with Mayu, Yuji, Mountain, and Snow at the Korean resturant.
The bus station was uber-crowded. The most poeple I have ever seen there. All the kids were catching the last buses to shiqi and to their schools. We ended up getting a taxi with another school girl because all the buses were sold out for the rest of the day. Yikes.
We got to Shiqi and caught another bus to a street that we could walk down to get to the resturant. We window shopped and goofed around a bit because we had some time. All the while, John was text messaging me about stuff.
We met with Mayu and Yuji about 6pm and headed to the resturant. They gave me a bouquet of flowers. Aaaawwww. We took pictures and chatted. Then Mt and Snow showed up about 30 mintues later.
We had an absolutely wonderful Korean BBQ dinner and the salad was terrific as well. So good.
We were there for like 2.5 hours. It was great. Mt gave me one of those little gong fu monk kid statues. This one has the guy doing a Monkey Fist stance. Cute. So cute.
We said our goodbyes and we would keep in touch.
Then Yumi and I caught the #1 bus to the Flower Hotel where we picked up the #38 to Xiaolan.
Somewhere between standing up on the #1 bus at the busstop and finally getting on the #38 and leaving, is when my wallet got stolen. Sneaky bastard.
Yumi said, "It's China." Yes it is. China, the bittersweet bastard. ;-D
The whole day served as a metaphor for my personal experience in China. And I am thankful that it reminded me just how much of a breeding ground this place is for theives.
Dont get me wrong, wonderful people are here too. Its a great place at times. It just seems there is more of a sense of people wanting to steal yo' stereo. Its like, everyone has the potential to be a theif here. Where at home and other places I have been, i dont get that sense.
(of course this can happen in other countries and it does, but its never happened to me in other countrires so there. ;-))
So, things stolen from me in china: 1 bike, 1 cellfone, 1 wallet, my innocence, and my good graces.
Things gained: Many wonderful friends, gong fu, unique experience, the ancient culture, history, hatred of chinese in business, The 1-Child Policy, and greater understanding of the world.

you know, with the way the day was, i didnt realize that it was the 4 year anniversary of the Sept 11th Terror attacks. Wow. The world is less safe, thanks to some jackasses in power - and its not just the obvious either. ;-)

September 10, 2005

A late night

This morning was fine. A well deserved sleep in. The lunch time was spent getting food and shopping and walking around the city. We just spent time doing nothing and I didnt some packing and junk. John told us he was coming into Xiaolan to meet up for dinner and such. Yumi cooked some food and took a nap before he showed up. Sorta relaxed today.
I shaved again. Its tough, but my neck where it is usually rubbed raw by the electric razor isn't rubbed raw with the razor. Thats good news I guess.
John showed up and then got a haircut and came back while we headed out to above CRC for dinner with a group of folks. Met some new couples and we talked about just stuff. Explaining how to discipline the bad students and Toby and James.
Then after CRC, we headed to the beer gardens while we played studid games and had fun. Antoine showed up and then we headed to a bar where a really horrible chinese band was playing.
Nuts. Loud. Too much vodka. Too much crappy music.
There are times when I just can't wait to get out of this country.
Then I look at Yumi and I dont want to leave.
AIYA!
goodnite.

September 09, 2005

More China Post shenanigans.

Got up early to put last things together again. As i was heading to customs, Yumi called me saying Coco wants to meet for lunch. So we met up down the street. i had my stuff with me. Since I have come back from Shaolin, I have started to snap back, in chinese, at the chinese when they all crowd around looking at me. That gets them to go away pretty quickly. "What are you looking at? or Stop staring!"
Went to China post after lunch to ship out my swords because I got word from US Customs its ok. Duh, of course it is.
I got to the Post Office and it was hell. Obviously, nothing that we went thru yesterday stuck with them at all. They were all like, "We can't send it." and I was like, "Yes you can." and then they would just stare at the package for a few minutes and then walk away and do something else and say, "msec gong ying mann". I was speaking in Chinese as best as I could with them.
I would occasionally get there attention by rattling my box to be like, dude, "My package". So, they finally got the bright idea for me to write down what I wanted to say. Expecting that I could write in Chinese because I barely know the language, so I must be able to write...
So I wrote: "Why the hell aren't you doing your job? Ship my damn package, Mailbox Head!"
He looked at it for a few moments, then nodded like he understood and went back to other jobs. ARGGH!!!!
Finally they got that guy back on the fone from last night. After an hour, btw. He said, "yes, they can't mail the package because they don't know about US customs...." I busted in, "US Customs is ok to take the package. I told them that 5 times but they aren't listening." So he talked to them and they shipped it out it within 5 minutes. ASSHOLES! INCOMPETENT ASSHOLES!!!
I went back home and did junk for the rest of the day because I was irritated so. I was not a happy camper. I ran some errands.
Tonight wasnt fun either.
Goodnite.

China Post Shenanigans

The highlight of my day was with China Post.
I went there with my lion heads and packed them up there. In addition i tried to ship out my two swords. That caused them some trouble. They kept saying they couldn't ship it, but never gave me a reason. I just kept telling them they could. That went on for awhile. I was there for a total of about 1.5-2 hours. After awhile, a guy who could speak a little english came over to me, and to cover up their lack of knowledge and incompetence, they explained that they couldn't ship it because they didn't know if US Customs would clear it. I was like, its a country filled with guns, you don't think they will allow fake swords thru customs? Use your head. They went back to call customs, but no answer., but I am sure he just sat back there doing nothing like they all the people with power in this country do.
So, he said if I could get the ok with customs, it will be ok to ship. So, you know, me, still thinking in common sense, thought that after me saying that I will be back tomorrow, he would tell the underlings there, that are working that I may be back tomorrow to try and ship out the package. Nope. (see tomorrows entry)
The rest of the day was trying to calm down from China post and doing errands and stuff.
Goodnite.

My Last Chinese Wushu Performance

Today was a wonderful but long day. In the morning, I planned to do more packing up operations and ship things out, but that didnt happen as I was talking to some friends and family online. Then Yumi came home for lunch so we cooked some good food.
I realized after hours of searching for my electric razor power cord, that I prolly threw it out into the trash by accident. So, i used what remaining power I had and only got half my face shaved. Poop. So I went out and bought myself a razor and some shaving cream to finish the job. I must tell you now, believe it or not, but I have never shaved like this before in my life. I have always had an electric razor. So, it was a new experience. I dont know if I will go back to electric. Who knows.
After that, i did some more stuff around here and then headed out to the practice studio at 4pm like Guo Sifu said.
Once I got there, we left about 10 minutes later. Alot sooner than I thought. I thought he said we would leave at 5pm. This is gonna cause some trouble because Yumi wants to come to the performance tonite. I messaged her because she was in class and told her what has happened. She apparently called Guo Sifu to ask about coming by herself and Guo Sifu told her it was very far away from Xiaolan and very hard to get too. Bummer.
It took us about 1.5 hours to get there or so. We stopped off in Ban Fu city proper to wait for more directions from our hosts. We then took a convoy there. It was in one of the poorest neighborhoods I have ever seen in China. It was very dirty, cramped, and just poor. I was amazed. There were old men and women bathing in the brown colored river going thru the town. Icky. In addition to that, the old men and women also looked like living mummies...without the wrappings. I mean, i had seen older chinese folk like this before, but not so many in one place.
Once we unloaded the truck and got things set up, we headed to get some dinner. I noticed that there were many dogs running around the area. I sure hope we arent having dog tonite. The food was quite good. One of the truck drivers wanted his picture taken with me and he was very protective of me as well throughout the night. He was just watching out for me I guess. He was a cool guy though. Spoke to me as best he could with the language barrier.
As we headed back to the performance area, which was the blacktop area of a primary school, Shou Wei Xiao Xue, it had gotten dark and they just started the small firework show. Then as I was warming up and changing, they started the big fireworks show. They were launching the big fireworks off the top of the school. It was very impressive. Really cool. They sure know how to celebrate a gweilos last performance. ;-)
The fireworks were exploding so low that the ash was falling down on everyone. And only the last one, in which the ash burns and glitters gold on its way down, did it pose a fire hazard. Some of the audience had to dodge burning ash. Also, it was quite hot tonite so we were all sweating while smacking at mosquitos.
Then the performance started and it was a fantastic show. Basically the same thing as before, but it was much more fun. In addition to the Yongning Long Shi group, there were the Yongning Xanda group of about 6 kids and then four 14 year old wushu kids from BanFu strutting their stuff. They were good.
During the inbetween stuff, i was off practicing my forms in the back and behind everyone. I was getting some onlookers paying more attention to me than to the show. Oh well.
I did four things. Hong Quan #2, #3, YinYang Gun, and Xing Bian/Fei Tau. My performances were ok, enjoyable, not marred by mistakes thankfully. I was more playful in these performances as well. At one point near the end of HQ#3 i bungled on it and just started running around in circles. It was quite funny. The audience loved it. Also, during #2, I got really close to the audience and that got some laughs. Also, the performances by the other guys in the dragon and lion dances were very good. They were on their marks and I didnt really notice any mistakes. They added some new things to the show as well. A guy stands at the top of a 20 foot pole with a lion and does his thing up there. The pedestal show has been extended, more pedestals this time and more complicated. It was a very good show.
Then we packed everything up and headed out around 11pm. I didnt get back here until 1230am and then I couldnt fall asleep and boy was i tired. I just couldn't sleep.

Cruising on through.

Spent alot of today practicing a bit of Japanese. I was trying to learn the phrases for "I want to eat/drink something." as well as its negative. And boy, its different for each phrase. I got totally confused.
While practicing, i was also uploading video to start editing. I went to the super market looking for a glove of some sort to protect my fingers when i use the meteor hammer. I get rope burn on my index finger if I dont have some sort of protection and then a blister forms. I couldn't find any gloves, driving, gardening, or warming gloves at all. What a pitty. I found a bunch of pink rubber cleaning gloves, but that wont do me any good.
Yumi came home and we chilled for a bit then grabbed some dinner at that Jack and the Maggot Pea cafe. It was alright. Then I went off to practice. I practiced hard and I tired myself out quick while practicing the meteor hammer, YinYang Gun, and Hong Quan 2 for the performance tomorrow. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, the Meteor Hammer has no set form for it so I have to string the movements however I like. I proceeded to hit myself a bunch of times with the meteor hammer. I got myself a couple times in the foot, once on the outside of my right leg just below the knee, and the worst one was a smack in the ear. The one that gave me the ear smack is from a movement that I just can't seem to control the very last part of it. So, I decided I am gonna take that move out of the form for right now until I can control it. Only sad thing is its one of the coolest looking bits.
Now, whenever someone makes a mistake and if it involves pain, the chinese laugh at it and in turn laugh at you. We do some of the same thing in the US, but I mean, not during a practice situation like that, you dont laugh, you usually offer any assitance and just make sure things are ok. Now I can understand other chinese students giggling about it and talking/whispering to each other about it, but when you see your teacher doing the same thing with some of his older students, its really disheartening and ugly. You especially don't think the teacher would laugh and make fun like that. I think at least. So i left practice a bit upset. Oh well, i guess its just Chinese culture.

Monday.

Practiced Japanese. Uploaded video. Went to the gym. I went to pick up my 1GB memory card and John told me that his supplier didn't have any more of that model and size. He said he would get his supplier to get another one from another supplier or he will give me my money back. I kinda hope I get my money back becausee I could use it when I get back to the US, but if he gets a card too me, then that would be nice too I guess. I just hope it works.
I also started working on my BOND LANGUAGE INSTITUTE review. Its gonna be a long one. I am trying to get all the information I can and get former teachers to remind me of some points to hit upon. Like there is this new girl working here that is a little heavy, and because she does not have the look that BOND wants, they are trying to cut her salary and figure a way to get rid of her. Poor girl. Stupid Bond. Do they really think that no one is gonna report on this stuff? Jeez.
Went to Gong Fu practice. Yumi came along, she wanted to see what it was like. I think she got bored. There isn't much too do if you arent practicing. She talked with Sifu for a bit. My meteor hammer ball kept seperating from the rope. Crappy chinese hunks of crap. So after the 5th time, we finally secured it with some extra wire and tied it up. It aint coming off now unless it rolls off the screw.
Practice was over and Yumi and I got some ice cream from McDonald's.
Goodnite.

Guangzhou Visit.

Yumi and I headed out to Guangzhou to visit John today. We left around 9AM and got to the city big bus station around 11am. Today was pouring rain. Big time. It was just coming down hard. On my taxi bike to the bus station, the guy's rain poncho was too small so i got wet all over my shorts n such. So, the whole bus ride there I was in wet shorts. Luckily they were able to dry out quickly.
They were playing some strange comedy/scary movie on the TV. Its about these ghosts that plague Hong Kong taxi drivers on the night shifts. It was kinda funny.
There are so many bus stations in Guangzhou it took us forever to figure out with John which bus station we were at. We ended up going to the one he was planning to go to to pick up his friend Irene at 12pm.
So basically, we had to kill 1 hour waiting for Irene, Dan's girlfriend. And once we did, we wasted more time while she was trying to get her luggage checked and finding the train terminal for her leaving at 350pm.
After that was settled we headed out to John's new apartment where he lived with a Swedish guy named Artoo. We hung out for a bit then went to see what Zhongshan University looks like. It still amazes me at how much the communists hold him up on a pedestal when he was the creator of the KMT and stood for everything that they are against. I guess that since the people like him, then the communists must make him look good to make themselves look good.
After that we had to take the subway back to the train station to see Irene off. Once we saw her off, we called up Ben and we headed out to the Garden City Hotel area (very nice area of Guangzhou) to shop and look at junk and then meet for Brazillian BBQ.
We got to the area and while waiting for Ben we went into the expensive mall where they had shops of all the very expensive fashion designers. They had some neat stuff, but it was all overpriced junk pretty much.
After that we met up with Ben and then headed to the BBQ place.
We were the first ones there. They said the meet wouldn't be done for another 20 minutes or so. Oh well. It was all you could eat and it was good. The buffet with salads and junk was good. Meat arrived and it was really good.
After dinner, Yumi and I headed back to the bus station and caught the 7pm back to Xiaolan. My feet were hella dirty from the rain and Guangzhou streets.
Goodnite.

Saturday errands.

Most of saturday was us just walking around and spending time in Xiaolan. Nothing really specail. Running errands and walking around the park and what not. In the morning we met up with Coco and Robert for Dim Sum at the Flower Hotel. We spent about 2 hours there. It was very nice.
After that we went to buy tickets for Guangzhou tomorrow morning. After that the park.
After that we went shopping.
For dinner we got some pizza and relaxed. Watched Roman Holiday. Never seen that before, believe it or not. It seems like that in the 50s, people used to hug each other violently. And Gregory Peck couldn't act at all.
Well, that was mostly it.
Goodnite.

Relaxing Friday.

Well not really relaxing. most of today while Yumi was at class I used for the gym and then to repack all my clothes and suitcases. That was tough and frustrating. I had to reorganize things and how I may ship my other packages home is gonna cause me trouble. I am thinking of packing up my two guitars and erhu in a big box and use that as a third piece of luggage since it would be cheaper than sending thru UPS or FedEx. I talked with the airlines via email and they gave me the specs and said there would be room, they have never had a problem with shipping an extra piece of luggage before like that. So, who knows. I am gonna have to make a big box, I need to take boxes and cut them up and tape them together. It will be interesting.
And repacking everything up made me start thinking more of leaving and that kinda got me down in the dumps a little. I mean, despite all the troubles I have had here, there have been much more wonderful things. Its hard to leave a life that you have created. Its tough.
That and I went to the gym. Worked a little bit on Zui Quan on a hardwood floor. yikes. Need to be careful. I was thinking I may want to try Zui Quan at the wushu performance, but I don't want to deal with the street and it doesnt look that good yet.
I will most likely do Ying Yang Gun, Meteor Hammer, and the Hong Quan that I learned here. However, I may also throw in Xing Yi Gun, I don't know yet. see how it goes at the show.
Yumi got back from work and we made plans to go get dinner. From there we took a night time paddle boat ride around the small lake at the Longshan Park feeding the ducks with some bread that we bought. After that we walked to the massage place and got a 1 hour foot massage then a 1 hour full body massage, which i didnt think was very good.
We then headed home.
Goodnite.

First day of September

Hit up the gym for the first time in a month. Started lifting weights. I tried to use the audio equipment in the exercise area and one of the staff tried to tell me I could use it, but I played dumb and was able to keep my music playing. Sometimes playing dumb is a good thing.
other Stuff I did was pretty much not worth writing about.
Go figure.
Have a goodnite.
